Our Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program prepares students to use non-invasive techniques for essential diagnostics as sonographers. It provides an in-depth journey into vascular, obstetric, gynecologic, abdominal, and musculoskeletal sonography, and more, giving students a well-rounded introduction to the various modalities of ultrasound.

Through classroom lectures and hands-on experience, including an externship, students in our Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program will learn:

  • Vascular, Abdominal, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Musculoskeletal Ultrasounds, and Superficial Structures, such as Thyroid and Breast

Program Objectives:

Graduates of the BS Diagnostic Medical Sonography program will

  1. Perform complete diagnostic medical ultrasound exams in a variety of clinical settings using appropriate sonographic instrumentation techniques and proper sonographer ergonomics with patient positioning.
  2. Obtain, review, and apply pertinent medical history and supporting laboratory data to facilitate optimal diagnostic findings relative to the
    presenting indications.
  3. Integrate knowledge of cross-sectional and relational anatomy with physiology, pathophysiology, and pathology as it relates to clinical correlation and appropriate sonographic image acquisition.
  4. Provide patient education related to medical ultrasound and promote principles of good health.
  5. Document anatomical structure, physiological function, and pathological findings for the interpreting physician.
  6. Exercise the appropriate level of autonomy utilizing critical thinking, problem solving and emotional intelligence to make judgments and decisions related to patient care.
  7. Model culturally sensitive, ethical, and professional behaviors as a member of the healthcare team.
  8. Communicate findings to varied audiences, using effective oral, visual, and written communication skills relevant to performing a diagnostic medical ultrasound.
  9. Apply knowledge and skills to register and complete nationally recognized certification exams.

Class schedules are subject to change. Students will be notified of any change prior to the start of the quarter. Not all schedules are available at all campuses. Speak to an admissions representative to learn more about which schedules are available for your requested start date. 


  • Mornings: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM  
  • Evenings: Monday through Friday, 5:30 PM – 10:30 PM 


  • Saturday – Sunday, 8:30 AM – 6:30 PM  
  • Friday – May be required

All applicants must meet the Smith Chason College General Admissions Requirements and pass the entrance exam to be eligible for enrollment.

Entrance Exam  

All applicants for the Bachelor Diagnostic Medical Sonography program must pass the Wonderlic entrance exam with a minimum passing score of:

  • 325 (Verbal)
  • 275 (Quantitative)
