Smith Chason knows the value of experience, which is why we hire experienced, professional nurses as our instructors and incorporate their knowledge into our curricula. We start by building your confidence in our high-fidelity nursing skills and simulation labs and then take it to the next step with off-site hospital and clinic externships. Our California vocational nursing diploma program is made up of five-course levels, each of which combines lecture hours, skill hours, and clinical hours on topics like:

  • Anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
  • Nursing fundamentals and basics of patient care
  • Patient assessment and communication
  • Healthcare ethics and professionalism
  • The growth and development of the human body and how it factors into healthcare
  • How to identify, treat, and prevent communicable diseases in patients
  • Further exploration of various aspects of nursing such as:
    • Medical/surgical nursing
    • Pharmacology
    • Maternity and pediatric nursing
    • Psychology, gerontology, and rehabilitation
    • Leadership and management skills
  • Gain hands-on experience in our on-campus nursing skills and simulation labs

Program Objectives Graduates of the Vocational Nursing diploma program will:

  1. Practice safe, quality, evidence-based patient care within the nurse’s scope of practice.
  2. Participate in a multidisciplinary team utilizing the principles of professionalism, teamwork, accountability, integrity, and autonomy.
  3. Promote patient-centered culturally sensitive care that supports the psychosocial and physiological integrity of clients to improve clinical outcomes.
  4. Apply best practices in nursing informatics and technology to ensure accurate and complete documentation in client care.
  5. Apply skills and knowledge to complete the NCLEX-PN exam with a passing score on the first attempt.


Evening/Weekend Session

Theory hours are Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 5:30 PM – 10:30 PM

Clinical hours are Saturday/Sunday from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

Los Angeles Campus, Day Session

Theory hours are Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 12:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Clinical hours are Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM AND Friday from 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Ontario Campus, Day Session

Theory hours are Monday/Tuesday 8:30 PM – 1:30 PM

Clinical hours are Wednesday/Thursday from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

All applicants must meet the Smith Chason College General Admissions Requirements and pass the entrance exam to be eligible for enrollment.

In addition to meeting the General Admissions Requirements, Vocational Nursing applicants must

  • Complete a criminal background check application
  • Write a 500-word essay on “Why I Want to be a Nurse”
  • Interview with the Nursing Program Director, Assistant Director, or Campus Director

Entrance Exam 

All applicants for the Vocational Nursing program must pass the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test entrance exam with a minimum verbal score of 302 and minimum quantitative score of 293
